Form, Function & Flow... Frequently Asked Questions

Is it similar to yoga or Pilates with specific exercises to do?

No.  The Alexander Technique is unlike anything that you have experienced before. The principles of the technique are portable and you can apply what you learn to all that you do everyday.  Yoga and Pilates students have found increased benefits in their practice through Alexander lessons.

Will I be manipulated or massaged?

No.  Alexander teachers teach both with verbal  instruction and may use their hands in a unique, gentle way.  It is completely different from chiropractors, or physical and massage therapists. Students remain fully clothed.

Is there a spiritual/religious value system involved?

No. The technique is not derived from a philosophy or belief system. It is a scientific discipline for attaining optimum human functioning.

How many lessons do I need?

That depends on you.  What level of refinement do you want to accomplish?  There is no set number of lessons. You find improvements with each lesson.

Is the Technique recommended by the medical community?

Yes. Doctors have been referring patients to Alexander lessons for over one hundred years.  Please see the link below.

Medical and Scientific Endorsements and Research

What is the cost of a lesson?

About the same as a massage and the information lasts a lifetime!  Individual lessons are $75 an hour. There is a discount if you take weekly lessons, 5 lessons for $350.  Another option is to attend group classes which start at $35 and have the added value of learning from observing others too.  Also see my Workshops & Events section for upcoming target group workshops.
